Cities designed with AI from the ground up

Traffic, energy and services planned by algorithms. Who would want to live there?

The most honest answer to many of these questions is that we do not know yet. That is a reason to keep watching, keep testing and keep talking, not to stop.

It is easy to talk about AI as if it were weather, something that simply happens to us. It is not. It is built by people, bought by people and regulated by people, and each of those choices can go more than one way.

What history suggests

Historians remind us that the printing press, the factory and the telephone all produced both panic and progress. The panic was rarely about the right things, and the progress was rarely evenly shared.

  • What we owe to future generations
  • What can be undone, and what cannot
  • What remains uniquely human
  • Who benefits, and who pays the cost

What we risk losing

We do not have to accept the framing that the future is a race. Races reward speed. Societies also need care, deliberation and the ability to change course.

The future is already here. It is just not very evenly distributed.

Attributed to William Gibson

In the end, the question of what AI means for humanity is also a question about what we value. The technology will reflect those values back to us, for better or worse.

The question

Every powerful technology redistributes something: time, money, attention, power. Artificial intelligence is no different. The interesting question is not whether it changes things, but who gets to decide how.

There is a version of the future in which AI takes on the drudgery and people spend more time on care, craft and conversation. There is another in which it hollows out the parts of life that gave us meaning.
