Google began rolling out Gemini’s Personal Intelligence to Android Auto on Oct 20, letting the in-car assistant use connected Google apps to tailor answers. Support for cars with Google built-in is due in the coming months.1 · 4
With permission, Gemini can draw on Gmail, Calendar, Photos, Maps, YouTube and Search. Google’s examples include retrieving flight details from an email, finding a place seen in a photo and navigating to an appointment without the driver reciting its address.1 · 3 This is a product-integration update, distinct from the model capabilities covered in our Gemini 4 Argon explainer.
Who can use it
Google’s rollout footnote limits Personal Intelligence to eligible personal Google accounts belonging to people aged 18 or older. It excludes the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the UK and Nigeria, as well as Workspace business, enterprise and education users. Connecting apps that Google groups under Workspace, such as Gmail and Calendar, does not make a managed Workspace account eligible.1 · 4
Personal Intelligence is optional, with app connections controlled in Gemini settings. Existing settings can carry into the car, as Ars Technica notes; this is worth checking before using a shared vehicle.1 · 2 For cars with Google built-in, Google says personalized responses require a connected phone. Core functions such as navigation, calls and music remain available without Personal Intelligence.1
What the privacy rules actually say
A no-training assurance needs more qualification than the rollout coverage suggests. Google’s linked privacy documentation, checked Oct 21, says it does not train generative AI directly on your Gmail inbox, Drive, Contacts, Calendar or other Workspace apps, or on imagery and audio in your Google Photos library.5
However, with Keep Activity on, summaries, excerpts, generated media and inferences used in Gemini interactions can train models, alongside prompts and responses. Google warns that a summary can sometimes be the email or file itself. A subset of processed Connected Apps data can also be human reviewed. Not training directly on a library is not the same as excluding information retrieved from it.5
Review app connections and activity settings before enabling personalization, and consider who can hear the answers. Disconnecting an app does not delete information already in Gemini Apps Activity.5 If your aim is a different data-processing setup, our guide to running a model locally with Ollama explains that separate approach; it is not an Android Auto replacement.
